UNUSUAL SUSPECTS is an exhibition of paintings by SF-based Adam Ansell. Ansell’s manic and super-saturated portraiture takes the viewer into a strange and strangely familiar gallery of effusive goofballs, shifty protagonists, sidekicks with side-eye, and alluring ladies of a certain era. They buzz and bounce within their color fields and seem to burst from the plywood that contains them. Adam uses expressive marks and exuberant layering to draw out mayhem and delight in his subjects, creating entire character arcs that happen somewhere just off-screen. Echoing his work as a playwright, community-organizer and director, his paintings explore dormant magic found in those people and places we often ignore. In addition to his exhibition of paintings, Ansell will be screening his film “Eye of the Puppet: The Case of the Streetwalking Streetwalker” on the 4 Star Theater movie screen during the opening reception, April 7 from 5-8pm.
